We regularly update this guide as restaurants open, menus change and hours shift throughout the High Desert. These are places we personally recommend to guests staying at The Seventh Ray House, along with a few new spots on our radar.
Looking for the best restaurants near Joshua Tree National Park? You’ve come to the right place.
We spend a LOT of time eating around the High Desert, and these are the spots we personally recommend to friends, family and guests staying at The Seventh Ray House.
This guide covers our favorite restaurants across Joshua Tree, Yucca Valley, Flamingo Heights, Pioneertown and Twentynine Palms — from old-school cowboy bars and late-night burgers to amazing pizza, date-night spots and some seriously good desert dining.
These aren’t just restaurants we found online. We actually eat at these places, and this is where we send our own guests when they ask where they should go.
And because the High Desert is constantly changing, we keep this guide updated as new restaurants open, menus change and hours shift
| Restaurant | Area | Best For |
|---|---|---|
Red Dog Saloon | Pioneertown | Tex-Mex, cocktails + breakfast |
The Tiny Pony Tavern | Yucca Valley | Burgers, late-night food + drinks |
Giant Rock Meeting Room | Flamingo Heights | Pizza + live music |
Kitchen in the Desert | Twentynine Palms | Date night + brunch |
Crossroads Cafe | Joshua Tree | Breakfast before the park |
Pappy & Harriet’s | Pioneertown | BBQ + live music |
The Copper Room | Yucca Valley | Cocktails + date night |
Nice Dream | Yucca Valley | Coffee, pastries + elevated dining |
#1 The Copper Room
Best for: Date night, martinis and High Desert sunsets
The Copper Room is one of the coolest dinner and cocktail spots in Yucca Valley.
The restaurant sits right alongside the runway at the Yucca Valley Airport — yes, Yucca Valley has an airport! — and the building has more than 50 years of High Desert history.
Until the early 1970s, this was THE place to be out here.
Frank Sinatra’s close friend and legendary songwriter Jimmy Van Heusen served as the honorary mayor of Yucca Valley, and the airport lounge became a gathering place for pilots, musicians and desert characters. Gram Parsons was also known to hang out here.
The current owners restored the space while leaning into that 1950s aviation history, and it’s now one of our favorite places to grab dinner and an ice-cold martini.
The bar overlooks the runway, and the sunsets here can be ridiculous.
Our take: Come around sunset, grab a martini and sit at the bar. This is one of our favorite date-night spots in Yucca Valley.
Good to know: The Copper Room is currently open daily for dinner.

#2 The Red Dog Saloon
Best for: Pioneertown vibes, Tex-Mex, cocktails and breakfast
The Red Dog Saloon is an iconic Old West saloon right in the heart of Pioneertown, California, just outside Joshua Tree.
The building dates back to Pioneertown’s original Western movie-set days, and the current owners brought the saloon back to life while keeping all of its old-school desert charm.
This is one of the first places we take friends when they visit because you get the FULL High Desert experience: dusty Pioneertown streets, an old Western saloon, great music, really good food and some of the best craft cocktails and mocktails in the area.
The menu is a fresh take on Tex-Mex with vegetarian and vegan-friendly options.
We also LOVE coming here for breakfast. The chilaquiles are amazing.
Our take: If you only have time to visit Pioneertown once during your Joshua Tree trip, walk around Mane Street and stop at Red Dog for a drink or a meal.
Good to know: Red Dog is open daily and serves breakfast, with later hours on Friday and Saturday nights. Always check their website for current hours before heading over.

#3 The Tiny Pony Tavern
Best for: Burgers, late-night food, drinks and a fun night out
Don’t let the exterior fool you — The Tiny Pony Tavern has some of the BEST food in Yucca Valley.
The inside has a really fun, eclectic High Desert vibe with vintage-inspired decor, art everywhere, a pool table, a photo booth and a great patio.
It somehow works equally well if you want to grab lunch in the middle of the day OR end up there late at night after everything else in town has closed.
Our go-to is the burger, and we almost always end up ordering fries for the table.
They also do weekend brunch, frequent DJs, karaoke and other events, so it’s worth checking what’s happening while you're in town.
Our take: This is probably the restaurant we recommend most when someone says, “We just want somewhere casual with really good food.”
Good to know: Tiny Pony is open seven days a week and stays open late — a rarity in the High Desert.

#4 Giant Rock Meeting Room
Best for: Pizza, drinks and live music near Flamingo Heights
Giant Rock Meeting Room is our neighborhood pizza place, bar and music venue in Flamingo Heights, named after the famous Giant Rock in nearby Landers.
And when we say neighborhood spot, we mean it — it’s right around the corner from The Seventh Ray House.
Naturally, we end up here A LOT.
They serve pizza, salads, beer, wine and drinks, and the space regularly hosts live music, comedy and other local events.
This is one of those places that just feels like the High Desert. It’s casual, quirky, local and always a good time.
Our take: Perfect for the night when you’ve been exploring all day and just want pizza, drinks and zero fuss.
Good to know: Their event schedule changes constantly, so check the calendar before you go. You might accidentally turn pizza night into a live show.

Best for: Date night, brunch and dinner after exploring Joshua Tree National Park
Kitchen in the Desert is located in Twentynine Palms, about 40 minutes from The Seventh Ray House, but in our opinion it is SO worth the drive.
It’s especially great if you’re planning to explore the eastern side of Joshua Tree National Park, since there is a park entrance in Twentynine Palms.
The restaurant is mainly outdoors and serves seasonal food with global flavors and a Caribbean influence. The entire place has an amazing desert atmosphere, and they regularly bring in local artists, DJs and musicians.
The vibes are immaculate.
They serve brunch and dinner daily, so it works just as well for a leisurely brunch as it does for a date night.
And if the deep-fried Oreos are on the menu when you visit: DO NOT sleep on them.
You’re welcome in advance.
Our take: One of the best choices in the area when you want the meal itself to feel like part of your Joshua Tree experience.

#6 Crossroads Cafe
Best for: Breakfast or lunch before exploring Joshua Tree National Park
Right in the middle of downtown Joshua Tree, Crossroads Cafe is a classic roadside-style diner and one of our favorite breakfast stops.
They serve made-from-scratch comfort food with a big menu that includes vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free-friendly options.
This is our favorite place to grab a breakfast burrito before spending the day exploring Joshua Tree National Park.
It’s also conveniently located along Highway 62 in downtown Joshua Tree, making it an easy stop before or after heading into the park.
Our take: If someone asks us where to grab a solid breakfast before Joshua Tree, this is usually our answer.
Good to know: Crossroads is currently open daily from morning through the afternoon, so think breakfast, brunch or lunch rather than a late dinner spot.

#7 Pappy & Harriets
Best for: BBQ, live music and the classic Pioneertown experience
A CLASSIC.
Pappy & Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace is an iconic restaurant and music venue in Pioneertown, California that has been around since 1982.
If you’ve researched a Joshua Tree trip for more than about five minutes, there’s a good chance you’ve already heard of it.
They’re known for open-fire barbecue, drinks, live music and an atmosphere that feels completely unique to the desert.
Some seriously huge artists have played here over the years, so ALWAYS check the concert calendar before your visit. You never know who might be coming through town.
This is one of our favorite places to grab BBQ, wander around Pioneertown and make a whole afternoon or evening out of it.
Our take: Pappy’s is more than just a restaurant — it’s one of those High Desert places you should experience at least once.
Good to know: Pappy & Harriet’s is now open seven days a week. Restaurant dining and ticketed concerts are separate, so eating at Pappy’s does not automatically give you access to a show.

#8 La Copine
Best for: An amazing upscale lunch in the High Desert
La Copine is one of the most beloved restaurants in the High Desert — and it also happens to be extremely close to The Seventh Ray House.
Their menu changes seasonally, and they consistently put out some of the most interesting food in the area.
This is the place we recommend when someone wants an elevated lunch that still feels distinctly Joshua Tree.
The only reason we’ve always kept La Copine as an honorable mention is because you have to plan for it. Their hours are limited, and it can get VERY busy.
But if you can make it work, do it.
Our take: Make a reservation ahead of time and build your day around it. The food is worth it.
Good to know: La Copine is currently open Thursday through Sunday from 11 AM–4 PM. Reservations are handled directly by the restaurant, and walk-ins are also welcome.

# 9 Nice Dream
Best for: Coffee, pastries, lunch, dinner and something a little more special
One of the newest additions to this guide is Nice Dream in Yucca Valley.
We finally made it over here recently, and it absolutely deserves a spot on the list.
Nice Dream originally started as Nice Dream Ices at the Joshua Tree Farmers Market and has now grown into a full restaurant, coffee shop, pastry destination, ice cream shop AND cocktail bar.
Yes. All of those things.
They serve coffee and tea, pastries and ice cream throughout the day, along with lunch and dinner menus built around seasonal ingredients, sustainably sourced seafood and a mix of Japanese and California influences.
It’s beautiful inside, the food feels thoughtful without feeling stuffy, and it fills a slightly different lane than almost anything else in Yucca Valley.
Our take: Come in the morning for coffee and pastries or make a dinner reservation and turn it into a date night.
Good to know: Nice Dream is currently open Thursday through Sunday, with dinner reservations strongly encouraged.

If you’re trying to narrow everything down, here’s how we usually recommend choosing.
For breakfast before Joshua Tree National Park, go to Crossroads Cafe.
For Pioneertown, choose Red Dog Saloon or Pappy & Harriet’s — or honestly, visit both.
For pizza and a casual local night, go to Giant Rock Meeting Room.
For late-night food and drinks, Tiny Pony is hard to beat.
For date night, we love Kitchen in the Desert, The Copper Room or Nice Dream.
And if you’re staying in Flamingo Heights, Landers or northern Yucca Valley, Giant Rock Meeting Room and La Copine are two of the best restaurants right in this part of the High Desert.
Some of our personal favorites are Red Dog Saloon, The Tiny Pony, Giant Rock Meeting Room, Kitchen in the Desert, Crossroads Cafe, Pappy & Harriet’s, The Copper Room, Nice Dream and La Copine.
The best choice really depends on which side of Joshua Tree National Park you're visiting and whether you're looking for breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks or live music.
If you’re entering Joshua Tree National Park from the Joshua Tree entrance, Crossroads Cafe is one of our favorite options for breakfast or lunch.
If you're using the Twentynine Palms entrance, Kitchen in the Desert is a great restaurant to work into your day.
Our favorite Yucca Valley restaurants include The Tiny Pony Tavern, The Copper Room and Nice Dream.
Yucca Valley is also a great central jumping-off point for visiting Pioneertown, Flamingo Heights, Landers and Joshua Tree.
Red Dog Saloon and Pappy & Harriet’s are the two Pioneertown restaurants we recommend most often.
They’re completely different experiences, and if you have enough time, it’s easy to visit both while walking around historic Pioneertown.
Giant Rock Meeting Room and La Copine are two of our favorites in Flamingo Heights.
They’re also two of the closest restaurants to The Seventh Ray House.
Many restaurants throughout the Joshua Tree area offer vegetarian and vegan options. Red Dog Saloon, The Tiny Pony, Giant Rock Meeting Room and Crossroads Cafe are all worth looking at if someone in your group has dietary preferences.
Menus change frequently in the High Desert, so we always recommend checking each restaurant's current menu before visiting.
We originally put this restaurant guide together for guests staying at The Seventh Ray House, our two-bedroom High Desert homestead on five acres in Flamingo Heights.
We’re close to Giant Rock Meeting Room and La Copine, with easy access to Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree, Pioneertown, Landers and Joshua Tree National Park — which makes it a pretty great home base if eating your way around the desert is part of the plan.
If you’re still looking for somewhere to stay during your Joshua Tree trip, you can learn more about The Seventh Ray House and book directly here.
Restaurant hours and menus in the High Desert change often. We update this guide regularly, but we always recommend checking each restaurant’s website or social pages before heading out.
