Looking for the best coffee shops near Joshua Tree National Park? As people who spend A LOT of time in the High Desert, we’ve tried our fair share.
Whether you’re a certified coffee snob, looking for the perfect matcha, need somewhere to work for a couple of hours, or just want a good cup of coffee before heading into Joshua Tree National Park, these are the places we personally keep going back to.
This guide covers our favorite coffee shops in Joshua Tree and Yucca Valley, and these aren’t just places we found online — we actually go to them.
We’re always trying new spots and regularly update this guide as new coffee shops open and hours change around the High Desert.
| Coffee Shop | Area | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Joshua Tree Coffee Company | Joshua Tree | Locally roasted coffee + beans to take home |
| Más o Menos | Joshua Tree | Coffee, design + cocktails later |
| Nice Dream | Yucca Valley | Specialty coffee, matcha + pastries |
| Matson Ambroise Coffee + Art | Yucca Valley | Coffee + art gallery atmosphere |
| Desierto Alto | Yucca Valley | Coffee, WiFi + wine shop |
| Frontier Café | Yucca Valley | Breakfast, coffee + working |
| The DEZ | Joshua Tree | Coffee + food before the park |
#1 Joshua Tree Coffee Company
Best for: Locally roasted coffee and grabbing beans to take home
Joshua Tree Coffee Company is probably the most recognizable coffee shop in Joshua Tree — and for good reason.
They roast their organic coffee right here in the Mojave Desert, and their beans have become a High Desert staple.
We’re such fans that we actually stock Joshua Tree Coffee Company beans for guests staying at The Seventh Ray House.
Their coffee shop is located right in downtown Joshua Tree and has the bright pink-and-blue branding you’ve probably seen around town. The shop itself feels more like a specialty coffee shop you’d find in a major city than something tucked away in a tiny desert town.
Just know that it can get BUSY, especially on weekends.
Our take: If you're serious about coffee and want to try something that is actually roasted in Joshua Tree, this should be on your list.
What we love: Grab a coffee while you're there and take a bag of beans home with you — or back to your Airbnb.
Good to know: Seating is fairly limited, and lines can get long during busy weekends, so this is more of a coffee destination than somewhere we'd necessarily plan to work for hours.

#2 Mas o Menos
Best for: Great coffee, amazing design and a coffee-to-cocktails experience
Más o Menos sits just outside the main downtown Joshua Tree area and is one of our favorite designed spaces in the High Desert.
During the day, it’s a coffee shop serving espresso drinks, flat whites, teas and matcha.
Then later in the day...
It basically turns into a cocktail and wine bar.
Which is exactly the kind of place we want in Joshua Tree.
The outside has a Southwestern desert feel, while the interior honestly looks like it came out of a design magazine. There’s also a big outdoor patio, and they regularly host DJs, live music, food pop-ups and other events.
We also like coming here if we need to get some work done with a coffee during the quieter part of the day.
Our take: Come for coffee in the morning and somehow end up back here for cocktails later that night.
Good to know: The food selection can vary, with pastries and grab-and-go options along with rotating food pop-ups. Check their current schedule if you're hoping to eat while you're there.

# 3 Nice Dream
Best for: Specialty coffee, matcha, pastries and something a little more elevated
Nice Dream is one of the newest additions to our High Desert coffee rotation — and we finally made it in recently.
It absolutely lives up to the hype.
Nice Dream started as Nice Dream Ices at the Joshua Tree Farmers Market and has now grown into a beautiful flagship location in Yucca Valley serving coffee, matcha, pastries, ice cream, lunch, dinner AND cocktails.
We went recently with our little one and tried a bunch of things, and everything was beautiful.
Their coffee program rotates through different specialty roasters, they take matcha seriously, and their pastry program focuses on local and heirloom grains.
It’s also one of those places where you walk in and immediately want to photograph everything.
Our take: This is currently one of the most exciting new coffee stops in the High Desert. Come for coffee and a pastry, but don't be surprised if you end up coming back for dinner.
What we love: Coffee + pastry + ice cream is a pretty unbeatable combination.
Good to know: Coffee, tea, pastries and ice cream are available throughout the day. Nice Dream is currently open Thursday through Sunday, so make sure they're open before making a special trip.

#4 Matson Ambroise Coffee + Art
Best for: Specialty coffee, pastries and a quieter art-filled space
Matson Ambroise Coffee + Art is literally exactly what it sounds like:
A coffee shop inside a High Desert art gallery.
And we love it.
The space is beautiful, calm and full of art, with both indoor and outdoor seating. It feels completely different from some of the busier coffee shops closer to downtown Joshua Tree.
They serve really good espresso drinks along with seasonal drinks and pastries.
Some of the best coffee we’ve had in the High Desert was enjoyed right here on their patio with our little one and our pup.
Which probably explains why we keep going back.
Our take: If you want really good coffee without the craziness of one of the more tourist-heavy Joshua Tree spots, this is a great stop.
Good to know: Matson Ambroise is located right along Highway 62 in Yucca Valley, so it's an easy stop on your way into the Joshua Tree area.

#5 Desierto Alto
Best for: Coffee, WiFi and stocking your Airbnb with wine + snacks
Desierto Alto might technically be a wine shop and market...
…but we come here for coffee all the time.
They serve Counter Culture Coffee along with espresso drinks, matcha, chai and tea, and there are a few window seats where you can hang out with a laptop.
They also have free WiFi.
But here's where Desierto Alto gets dangerous.
You walk in for a latte and suddenly you're leaving with a bottle of natural wine, cheese, charcuterie, ice cream, snacks and somehow an entire Airbnb grocery haul.
Their shelves are stocked with natural, French, Italian and Spanish wines, along with a massive mezcal selection, non-alcoholic options, cheese, snacks, frozen food and other fun things.
And if you're traveling with kids, there's even a little play area.
Our take: This is one of our favorite two-for-one stops. Grab coffee in the morning and stock up on wine and snacks for the house while you're there.
Good to know: Desierto Alto is in Yucca Valley right next door to The Tiny Pony Tavern — not Morongo Valley. They're currently open seven days a week, starting at 7 AM.

Frontier Cafe
Best for: Coffee, breakfast, lunch and getting some work done
When you're coming into Yucca Valley, Frontier Café is one of the classic High Desert coffee stops.
It has a big, comfortable space with plenty of seating, which makes it one of the easier places in the area to meet up with friends or sit down with your laptop for a while.
They serve all the classic coffee drinks along with breakfast and lunch.
We especially like stopping here before wandering around the shops in downtown Yucca Valley.
Our take: If you need a coffee shop where you can actually sit down, eat something and stay for a little while, Frontier is a solid choice.
Good to know: Frontier is currently open daily from 7 AM–5 PM.

Best for: Coffee + grabbing food before Joshua Tree National Park
The DEZ Fine Food is one of our favorite quick stops in downtown Joshua Tree.
They serve Stumptown espresso along with sandwiches, breakfast items, salads, smoothies, their famous date shakes and a bunch of grab-and-go food that's perfect for taking into Joshua Tree National Park.
And there's actually a little more to The DEZ now than there used to be.
They now have two locations right near each other in downtown Joshua Tree.
The original Little DEZ is still the tiny takeaway shop we’ve always known, but Big DEZ opened nearby with indoor dining, a patio and an expanded breakfast/café setup.
So if you remember The DEZ as having basically no seating, that’s no longer the whole story.
Our take: This is one of the best stops if you need coffee AND something you can bring into Joshua Tree National Park for later.
Good to know: If you just need something quickly, Little DEZ is great for grab-and-go. If you want breakfast and somewhere to sit, head to Big DEZ.

If you don't have time to try all of them, here's how we'd choose.
For coffee roasted in Joshua Tree, go to Joshua Tree Coffee Company.
For coffee + cocktails, go to Más o Menos.
For specialty coffee, matcha and pastries, go to Nice Dream.
For a quieter coffee shop with a beautiful setting, go to Matson Ambroise.
For coffee + wine + snacks for your Airbnb, go to Desierto Alto.
For somewhere to work for a little while, we'd look at Frontier Café or Desierto Alto.
And for coffee + breakfast or food to take into Joshua Tree National Park, go to The DEZ.
If you're looking specifically in the town of Joshua Tree, Joshua Tree Coffee Company is our go-to recommendation for locally roasted coffee.
We also love Más o Menos if you want somewhere with more of a hangout atmosphere, and The DEZ if you want coffee and food before heading into Joshua Tree National Park.
Our favorite coffee shops in Yucca Valley are Nice Dream, Matson Ambroise Coffee + Art, Desierto Alto and Frontier Café.
They're all very different, which is actually what we love about the coffee scene out here.
Joshua Tree Coffee Company and The DEZ are both located in downtown Joshua Tree and make easy stops before entering Joshua Tree National Park through the West Entrance.
If you also need breakfast or food to bring into the park, The DEZ is especially convenient.
If we need to open the laptop for a bit, Frontier Café is one of the easier options because it has plenty of seating.
Matson Ambroise Coffee + Art or Nice Dream are also great spots to set up with a laptop and crush a few coffees.
Just remember that a lot of coffee shops in the High Desert are relatively small, so we wouldn't plan on setting up an eight-hour office anywhere during a busy weekend.
Nice Dream is one of our current favorites for matcha and has a dedicated multi-varietal matcha program.
Más o Menos and Desierto Alto are also good options if you're looking for something other than coffee.
Joshua Tree Coffee Company roasts its coffee locally in Joshua Tree.
We love it enough that we keep their beans stocked for guests staying at The Seventh Ray House.
We originally created guides like this for guests staying at The Seventh Ray House, our two-bedroom High Desert homestead on five acres in Flamingo Heights.
We're centrally located between Yucca Valley, Joshua Tree, Pioneertown, Landers and Joshua Tree National Park, which means most of our favorite coffee shops, restaurants and things to do are an easy drive away.
And yes — we keep locally roasted Joshua Tree Coffee Company beans at the house.
If you're still looking for somewhere to stay during your Joshua Tree trip, you can learn more about The Seventh Ray House and book directly here.
Coffee shop hours change throughout the year in the High Desert. We update this guide regularly, but always recommend checking each shop's website or social pages for current hours before heading out.
